The book is sort of a CSI-Boston (’s) a cast of strong characters sleuth a series of attacks on the city and use science to uncover a growing plot. Pearl centers his mystery on a few members of the first-ever graduating class of the Massachusetts Institute of Techn Matthew Pearl’s “The Technologists” is a historical mystery set in post-Civil War Boston/5.

Four young students of the institute are thrown in at the deep end in an effort to unravel this unseen foe with the use of science.

These are the Technologists. The Technologists is an intriguing read with Matthew Pearl basing a lot of his characters around the genesis of MIT itself, resultantly it has a great feel to it and often sounds like a highly plausible account of actual happenings.4/5().

This is the same world of his very enjoyable first book, The Dante Club: A Novel, (indeed the events of that novel are referred to in "The Technologists") and this The young technologists book with its theme of new scholarship fighting against tradition and its treatment of the Civil War felt very similar in places/5().

Like The Technologists, Matthew Pearl's first three novels—The Dante Club, The Poe Shadow, and The Last Dickens—have all been set primarily in the vibrant milieu of mid- to late-nineteenth-century America. What scenes and motifs from The Technologists were the most memorable to you, and did you draw any similarities to these prior works.
